The first week of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) T20 Challenge has been nothing short of action, with the Momentum Multiply Titans currently placed fifth on the log standings after four matches (2 wins and 2 losses).
A look at their opening matches;
Momentum Multiply Titans vs Auto Investments North West Dragons – SuperSport Park, Centurion (Friday, 08 March 2024)
Titans are the defending champions this season, and they showed their prowess early on after they beat Dragons with relative comfort by 13 runs in Centurion.
Batting first after losing the toss, the Titans recorded 169 for seven with Proteas T20 captain Aiden Markram (40) top-scoring, followed by Rivaldo Moonsamy (35) and Dewald Brevis (29).
Seasoned South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi recorded the best figures for the Titans, with support from Junior Dala (3/30), to keep the Dragons at bay on 158/8 to give the Centurion-based side a solid opening win.
Gbets Rocks vs Momentum Multiply Titans – Boland Park, Paarl (Sunday, 10 March 2024)
Veteran, Aaron Phangiso, starred with bat and ball to help Momentum Multiply Titans make it two wins from two as they edged out Gbets Rocks to win by four wickets at Boland Park.
Spinner Phangiso, 40, made his mark by first claiming a miserly 1/16 in four overs, playing a key part in restricting the Rocks to 126/9 after they won the toss and batted.
Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers bagging 4/23 with Lizaad Williams collecting 2/30.
Although Sibonelo Makhanya (34) and Rivaldo Moonsamy (25) managed to get starts up front, the Centurion-based outfit found themselves in trouble on 99/6 in the 17th over after returns of 2/22 apiece by Michael Copeland and Siyabonga Mahima.
But Phangiso crunched two sixes and four in a dashing 25 off 9 balls to rescue his side and carry them to their target with five deliveries to spare.
Momentum Multiply Titans vs Dafabet Warriors - SuperSport Park, Centurion (Wednesday, 13 March 2024)
Titans suffered a nail-biting two-run defeat at home in their mid-week encounter against Dafabet Warriors.
With the target set at 186 runs, the locals ended on 183/7. This despite Dewald Brevis striking an attacking 50 (29 balls, 5 fours, 3 sixes) and Rivaldo Moonsamy hitting 34 to put the Titans on course victory.
At one stage they were seemingly coasting at 121/3 after 13 overs, needing just over 50 in 7 overs when Heinrich Klaasen was cleaned up by fellow Protea Marco Jansen (1/49) to begin the slide.
Dayyaan Galiem (32) and South Africa T20 captain Aiden Markram (25) were removed by Simetu to jolt the chase further, and Corbin Bosch (7) was cleaned up by the seasoned spinner to leave the home side limping at the end as they ended just short.
DP World Lions vs Momentum Multiply Titans – DP World Wanderers, Johannesburg (Friday, 15 March 2024)
The Lions inflicted a second straight loss on reigning champions Momentum Multiply Titans, edging them out by one run in a last-ball thriller at DP World Wanderers Stadium.
Set 184 for victory after winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Titans were on course for victory when they reached 146/3 just after the 16-over mark thanks to a 52-ball 88 (6 fours, 6 sixes) by Rivaldo Moonsamy.
But the tide turned from there as Codi Yusuf (2/48) landed two crucial blows to leave the Titans struggling at 168 for six.
They refused to give in, though, and needing 14 off the final over sent down by Proteas star Kagiso Rabada (1/24), brought the equation down to two off the final ball thanks in the main to Aaron Phangiso (9*), before only managing a bye to hand the win to the Lions.
