The T20 Challenge is a premier domestic Twenty20 Cricket tournament in South Africa, making its debut in the 2003–04 season.
Formerly known as the Standard Bank Pro20 Series until 2010–11, it underwent subsequent name changes including the MiWay T20 Challenge (2011–12), RamSlam T20 Challenge, and Betway T20 Challenge.
During this time, the CSA Franchise System was made up of six teams, Lions (consisting of Central Gauteng and North West), Titans (consisting of Northerns, Easterns, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga), Warriors (consisting of Eastern Province and Border), Cobras (Western Province and Boland), Dolphins (KwaZulu-Natal Coastal and KZN Inland), Knights (Free State and Northern Cape).
When CSA expanded to a 15-team professional structure, with eight teams in Division 1 and seven teams Division 2, it meant all affiliates must be independent with a team in one of the divisions.
The six franchise teams gained automatic entry to the top division, whilst the other affiliates had to bid for the additional two spots. North West and Boland were successful in their bidding and currently play in Division 1.
With the two-division system in place, teams gain automatic promotion/relation based on the points acquired throughout the season in the three different cricket formats.
Twenty20 (T20) cricket is a shortened format introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003, featuring a single innings per team restricted to a maximum of twenty overs.
