Roodeberg has triumphed with no less than two Double Gold and two Gold medals at this year’s esteemed Veritas Awards.
The Roodeberg Double Gold twosome comprises the world-class signature red blend, Dr Charles Niehaus 2019, and the suave Roodeberg Reserve 2020. The victorious Dr Charles Niehaus blend, a fitting tribute to the wine’s illustrious founder, also secured gold medals for the 2020 and the museum class 2011 vintages.
The jewel in the Roodeberg crown, Dr Charles Niehaus 2019 also excelled on the international wine stage earlier this year bringing home a Gold medal from the 2023 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
“Our award-winning reds are all about selecting the best of the best from the vineyards down to the finest barrels in the cellar for the final blend. Our sights are set on producing the best top tier blends that our vineyards can deliver,” says Roodeberg winemaker, James Ochse.
Named after Dr Charles Niehaus who pioneered the cherished South African wine brand over 70 years ago, Roodeberg’s super-premium signature blend has evolved into a superbly concentrated and integrated wine with fruit purity and complexity at its core. The award winning 2019 vintage is a harmonious blend of Shiraz, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Malbec and Petite Sirah. Rich and juicy with great depth and fruit concentration, the wine erupts in your glass with aromatic layers of blackcurrant, mulberries and plum enlivened by hints of violets. It is generous with a well-integrated, grippy tannin structure that rewards with an intense and lingering finish.
The more voluptuous Roodeberg Reserve 2020 is an intense, richly layered blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in equal measure with Malbec, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah in the supporting roles.
The wine is silky soft and beautifully balanced between red currants and dark berries that enhance the bold and juicy tannins. Smoky nuances of vanilla and sweet spices from the seamless oak integration linger on the palate.
The 23 rd Veritas Awards, South Africa’s longest running and most prestigious wine competition, attracted 1 247 entries this year.
